The Euseigne pyramids and the Val d'Hérens, 18 minutes away

The Euseigne pyramids are earth pillars wearing boulders like hats, 18 minutes by car from our chalet and free to visit all year. What they are, how to get there, when to go and what else the valley offers.

Euseigne pyramids: why the stones stay on top

The Euseigne pyramids are earth pillars topped with large boulders, at 960 m above the village of Euseigne. The site is listed as being of national importance.

They formed in glacial deposits: where a stone shields the ground from rain, the earth beneath stays put, while the soil around it washes away. The stones on top give the pillars their hat-like shape.

11 km, 18 minutes, free entry, all year

From the chalet it is 11 km by road, about 18 minutes by car (OSRM calculation). Without a car, the PostBus line Sion, Vex, Euseigne, Evolène, Les Haudères runs through Euseigne.

The site can be visited on foot all year and access is free. It is easy to combine with the upper valley, or with Les Grands Bains d'Hérémence on the way back.

The Val d'Hérens, the valley outside our window

The Val d'Hérens runs south from Sion through Vex, Euseigne, Evolène and Les Haudères up to Arolla. Our chalet is in Les Masses, municipality of Hérémence. The photo at the top shows the view from the chalet up the valley.

The Val des Dix, a side valley, leads up to the Grande Dixence dam. In winter it has the Pralong cross-country trail and dog sled rides.

Further up: Lac Bleu and Hérens cows

At the head of the valley, a short family path leads to the Lac Bleu d'Arolla, a small blue lake with views of the glaciers beyond. From the chalet it is about 39 minutes by car to La Gouille, where the path starts, and 49 minutes to Arolla (OSRM).

This is also the home valley of the Hérens cattle breed. The inalpes, when cows go up to the summer pastures, take place on June weekends. Check the dates of the spring and autumn cow fights (combats de reines) with Hérémence Tourisme (+41 27 281 15 33).

Our chalet is 11 km from the Euseigne pyramids, about 18 minutes by car (OSRM), and 1.8 km by road from the Les Masses chairlift.
